Today's book review is called *How Not To Disappear by Clare Furniss. This book is Clare's second novel and is out this month. Clare's first novel is called The Year Of The Rat. I have read some great reviews on How Not To Disappear. The first thing I noticed as soon as the book arrived was the front cover, I do love a good cover on a book.
"Our memories are what make us who we are. Some are real. Some are made up. But they are the stories that tell us who we are. Without them we are nobody."
As soon as I read this on the back of the book above, I knew that it was going to be a good book straight away, especially the first sentence, "our memories are what make us who we are." Very powerful. The two main characters who we see within in this book are Hattie and her great-aunt gloria.
It's summer time and things for Hattie are not quite going as planned. Her best friend Reuben has gone to Europe to 'find himself" and Hattie's other best friend Kat, is currently in Edinburgh with her new girlfriend Zoe. Hattie is dealing with the drama around her mum's wedding and finds out that she has a great-aunt. Hattie also soon discovers something else.
At the very beginning book we meet Hattie and her mother. Hattie who is seventeen, is having a conversation with her mother and the book gets straight into the story and we start to learn more about Hattie and her family right away. I actually felt quite moved and emotional reading the first few pages. Brilliantly written straight from the beginning. As the story moves on, we learn more about Hattie's best friends and we discover the real friendship and relationship between Hattie and Reuben, through emails sent back and forth between the two. But Hattie is hiding a secret from Reuben and we soon discover if she will tell him her secret.
Gloria, who is Hattie's great-aunt, who no one knew existed, comes into her life. Gloria's neighbour ring up and Hattie answers the phone. She explains that Gloria is not well and Hattie finds out that Gloria is in the early stages of dementia. After meeting, Hattie and Gloria set out on a road trip of self-discovery. Gloria wants to finally confront the secrets of her past before they are erased from her memory and Hattie wants to face the hard choices that will determine her future.
This book is very-well written and deals with many real-life situations and makes the story more realistic and will make you feel so many different emotions. I really like how we get to read about Hattie and Gloria's stories and the novel moves between the past and the present day.
