A Face In The Crowd | Guest Post

My name is Stephanie Lamont, I was inspired by God a few weeks ago to write the following verses, after visiting a city centre and being shocked, by the number of homeless people there were.

A FACE IN THE CROWD

It’s 2017 but the wheels turn backward.
More people are cold, hungry and without accommodation.
In a city centre, a lady sits in a doorway,
with all of her few belongings.
An old lady, it could be your mother.
She’s not begging, just quietly watching the world go by.
Day after day she sits, watching, waiting,
for what, she knows not.
Was life meant to be like this?

People walk by and look the other way.
Some stop to say hello and bring her food.
Just one pound for a sandwich,
is that too much to ask?
People with bags on their arms, full of the latest fashion,
worn once and thrown away, a fortune spent.
Day turns to night and back to day.
She’s still there, watching, waiting, week in, week out.
It’s getting colder.  Will she survive the winter?

More, much more needs to be done.
Too many taxes wasted on unnecessary projects.
A person’s dignity being eroded away,
through the neglect of the system.
More shop doorways occupied daily, week in, week out,
by old ladies, old gentlemen.
Shouldn’t the world be kinder to them at their time of life?
